//trashFiles is an initiative built by designers across America.
It is an ever growing record of humanity and the effects of our consumerist behaviors on the planet.
This digital archive is intended to equip artists with the necessary resources to create data-driven artworks that shed light on the state of our environment and the consequences of our actions.
How We Collect Assets
Collection is a multi step process in which we gather specific assets to create a consistant archive. The apps below have been chosen, because the vast majority of phones will be able to participate for free.
- GLB 3D File:
Use the Polycam app to 3D scan inappropriately discarded packaging.
- Utilize the Automatic Photo Mode and Process with the Optimized setting.
- Audio Recording:
Record approximately 15sec of sound from the location of the item with RodeReporter App. Settings need to be set to export MP3 compressed at 128kbps.
- Location:
Note the GPS coordinates of the item.These can be accessed using the Google Maps App or from within Polycam
- Title, Description, and Time:
Note what the item is, the brand it belongs to, as well as the approximate time of capturing the object.
- Material:
Note the item's primary material.
- Submission:
Request the submission form below.
Rules & Recommendations
Here are a few things to keep in mind if you are aiding in the archive's growth.
- Only scan and submit packaging materials, ex: no tires on the side of the road or plastic sheeting.
- Never submit objects that originated from yourself.
- Do not touch the objects. You will want to dispose of it appropriately, but without proper gloves or tools you shouldn't touch anything.
- Scan objects atleast a mile from your residence. We don't want you to accidently dox yourself.
